It’s a Dog’s Life When Dex’s Day Out Slobbers onto Standalone Headsets

Labrodex Studios has a bit of an obsession for dogs – labradors in particular – if you couldn’t tell by the name. Best known for its first-person shooter (FPS) Scraper: First Strikethe studio has previously released an augmented reality (AR) app to celebrate International Dog Day (Dex: Your AR Dog Companion) as well as helping support the Guide Dog Foundation and America’s Vet Dogs. So it’s no surprise that Labrodex Studios’ latest venture uses its favourite (and only) mascot, Dex the Labrador in a new virtual reality (VR) experience called Dex’s Day Out.

Dex's Day Out

Dex’s Day Out has been created as a tranquil and relaxing experience where you get to play with Dex, seeing him perform tricks, playing fetch and making sure he’s well fed in the countryside setting.

For the project, Labrodex Studios has partnered with HTC Vive, helping bring the app to both Chinese and English-speaking markets for the HTC Vive Focus headset. Alongside Vive Focus, Oculus Go will also see support initially. In the future, the studio also plans on bringing Dex’s Day Out to Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Oculus Quest, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

The will be a total of three phases for Dex’s Day Out over the course of 2019, with this first phase due out early this month for Vive Focus and Oculus Go. Phase two will see the introduction of a new module with information about the Guide Dog Foundation. Users will be able to see how the Guide Dog process works and how they’re trained. The Guide Dog Foundation will also create a 360-degree video to show off their training facility.

The final and third Phase is planned for release later this year, adding in some additional tricks, treats, voice commands and new gameplay features, expanding the scope of the experience so players can explore the surrounding world with Dex. Labrodex Studios has confirmed that all these future updates will be free of charge to everyone who owns the app.
