Our First Look At VR Zombie Shooter Arizona Sunshine On Oculus Quest

The standalone port will feature the full game experience, albeit with downgraded visuals.

I’ll be honest with you, I’m very excited for the release of Arizona Sunshine on the Oculus Quest. Despite having released all the way back in 2016–or the “The Year of VR” as I affectionately refer it — Vertigo Games’ VR zombie shooter remains one of my favorite immersive experiences to date. Maybe it’s due to my intense love of the zombie-horror genre or perhaps my fondness of free-roam VR shooters in general; whatever the case, Arizona Sunshine has earned a special place in my heart right next to beloved zombie games like Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising

Today, we received our first look at the experience running on the Oculus Quest headset, and while it definitely appears as though standalone users will be enjoying the full Arizona Sunshine experience, their untethered adventure will come at the cost of visual fidelity.

Much like the original 2016 release, the standalone port will allow up to four players to embark on an adrenaline-fueled journey across the American Southwest during which they’ll take down marauding hordes of flesh-hungry zombies using a vast arsenal of both single and two-handed weaponry; this includes sniper rifles, shotguns, dual pistols, grenades, and a variety of other anti-zombie equipment.

That being said, visuals have definitely taken a noticeable hit. Seeing as the game takes roughly around 4-hours to complete–8 if you’re a completionist–it’s not surprising Vertigo had to make significant changes in order to bring the full experience to standalone. The textures appear to feature less detail, particle effects and lighting have been scaled down, but all-in-all its still an impressive example of the Quest’s capabilities.

Arizona Sunshine will launch on Oculus Quest on December 5th for $39.99, just in time for the games three year anniversary. In celebration of #ArizonaVRsary, Vertigo is hosting a worldwide contest in search of the best Arizona Sunshine moments from the past three years. Contestants can submit a video link, image, or written story involving their favorite moment playing Arizona Sunshine for the chance to win a slew of Arizona Sunshine and Oculus Quest-related prizes.

Arizona Sunshine launches on Oculus Quest December 5th for $39.99 via the Oculus Store. Both of the post-launch DLC expansions, Dead Man and The Damned, are scheduled to launch at a later date. No word yet on whether or not players will be expected to repurchase the DLC releases, though considering the fact we’re already throwing down the full price for the same experience with downgraded graphics, you’d think the developer would throw standalone players a bone.
